Artist Lee Downey has spent decades working with Asia’s dinosaur fossils, as exemplified by this striking hand-carved life-sized Skull made with Agatized Dinosaur Bone from a 90-million-year-old Brontosaurus, a gigantic herbivorous dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic Period. This carved skull’s matrix exhibits many unusual and subtle patterns, reminiscent of miniature brick face or stone.
Agatized Dinosaur Bone is an extremely rare form of fossil that is found only within the Morrison Formation on the Colorado Plateau, a geologic area approximately 150 million years old. Minerals found in Gembone include hematite, iron, pyrite, jasper, marcasite, agate, quartz and other crystal.
