ABOUT THE ARTIST, LEE DOWNEY

Lee Downey is an American, California-born artist who, since 1984, has been based in the ancient village of Tampaksiring in Bali, Indonesia. Downey works and lives with a family of master carvers, playing a crucial role in the survival of native traditions, and helping evolve their distinctive techniques, with complementary methods and styles inspired by his love of fossils, rare elements, and the human skeleton.
Downey, who was trained in the jeweler’s craft and art, uses gems, minerals, precious metals, fossils and materials such as mother-of-pearl as his palette. His breathtaking studies have made him one of the foremost living artists of Natural History.
