The Fossil Record is the history of life on earth as documented by the remains or imprints of organisms preserved in sedimentary rock. Diplomystus is an extinct genus of freshwater clupeomorph fish distantly related to modern-day extant herrings, alewives, and sardines. Mioplosus is an extinct genus of percid fish that lived from the early to middle Eocene. Mioplosus have pointed teeth and are believed to have been voracious predators: individuals have been found with fish lodged in its throat. Mioplosus fossils are never found in large groups, which suggest they were solitary. This beautiful piece of natural history contains a 5.5″ Diplomystus and a 6″ Mioplosus.
