Only a small fraction of life makes it into the fossil record. Most living organisms simply disappear without a trace. Southwest Wyoming’s Green River Formation has preserved spectacular, detailed, and complete fish fossils from the Eocene Epoch of approximately 50 million years ago. Gar are an ancient order of ray-finned fish. After more than a century of excavating fossil fish from the Green River Formation it is estimated that only a few hundred complete gars have been discovered. The fossil gar is rare and highly prized. Quarried from Mosaic Lake and unearthed by hand, this striking mural contains a 28.5″ Gar Simplex.
