The Imperial, or Empress Cicada comes from Southeast Asia. The largest species of cicada, it has a head-body length of about 2.8 inches and a wingspan of 7–8 inches. The largest cicada in the world, it is also one of the loudest and, according to locals in its native Malaysia, the tastiest. Its unusual call differs from that of American cicada, sounding more like an extremely vocal primate than an insect. Cicadas, though startling in appearance and sound and harmful to some crops and trees, are nevertheless harmless to humans and remain an important food source in Latin America and Asia.
