11 x 14 Cretaceous Ammonite Fossil

Ammonites are extinct Cephalopods that outwardly resemble our modern day Nautilus but are actually more closely related to squid and octopus. Various species can be found all over the world representing many different ages and epochs in earth’s history, but those mined in Madagascar are commonly the most beautifully preserved. The sequential chambers of ammonite’s shell mark the growth of the organism inside and, like the nautilus they resemble, acted as a gas ballast to keep the animal afloat.
